The Famous Blue Jean: Carhartt Jeans

As everyone knows, jeans are a simple pant made from a fabric called denim. They have quite a colorful history and are an integral part of the growth of the American West. They were a popular garment for cowboys, outlaws, farmers, and railroad workers. Some brands of jeans have been around for quite a few generations. Brands like Levi’s, Wrangler and Carhartt jeans have all survived and contributed to the growth of this great nation: America.

Before There Were Jeans

Prior to blue jeans there was an indigo cloth exported from India during the 16th century called dungaree. It was very thick and made of cotton and sailors used it to make clothes.

The jeans fabric itself was first made in the late 1600s in Italy. It was first made for the Italian navy as the fabric could be worn either wet or dry. In addition its versatility allowed the legs to rolled up while washing the boat decks and it could be easily washed with a ducking in the ocean. This fabric came to be called denim.

The Rivets

Sailors brought their denim trousers to the Americas with them on their voyages of discovery. The farmers and ranchers in the states soon adopted them and they gradually made their way out west to be adopted by cowboys and miners of the day. One day a salesman named Levi Straus noticed a miner kept on purchasing his cloth to reinforce pants he was wearing that kept on ripping while he worked the mines. The miner eventually decided to reinforce the pants with copper rivets in areas that were prone to be torn. Levi suggested they go into business together and the rivet jean was born.

Designer Jeans: From Gold Rush Blue Jeans to Devine Denim

Copyright (c) 2009 Abby Lawal

What would Levi Strauss think if he were around today to see the transformation of the blue jeans he supplied during the gold rush in California? Blue jeans have developed from the rugged pants gold miners wore into the denim designer suits of today.

It’s hard to believe that pants created to be functional, rugged, and resistant to tearing with riveted pockets would be a high fashion item today.

Levi Strauss added rivets to his line of jeans when miners complained that their pockets kept ripping. A man named Jacob Davis thought of the idea of brass rivets for holding on the pockets. He was not a rich man, so was unable to patent his idea. He contacted Strauss and sold him the idea of the rivets. The rivets filled the bill when it came to long lasting pockets.

Did you know that’s why your expensive designer jeans have rivets? Who knew? The jeans then became popular in western movies and during WWII; soldiers wore jeans when they were on leave. When the war was over, Levi jeans developed competition from companies like Wrangler and Lee.

During the 1960’s, jeans became very popular with the college crowd and young people. They were no longer only for the working man, but for men and women alike. Jeans became a fashion symbol in the 1980’s, being picked up by famous designers. Designers, such as Devine Denim developed many different styles of jeans, putting their own designer labels on them.

Not only are these designer jeans stylish, they also have different textures and designs like soft stretch suits, denim separates, denim trouser, jeans pants, jeans skirts and jeans sets for both men and women.

What is your favorite brand and style of blue jeans?

I’ve owned numerous kinds of blue jeans from all over the world and different places. Gap use to carry my favorite type of jeans – low riders, dark rinse/vintage jeans, but the fit is different than what they use to be. Lately, the only jeans I wear is True Religion/ dark rinse jeans with a bootcut. True Religion jeans are $200 plus, but it was worth the price. Will anyone reccomend some good jean brands to try. I don’t mind alterations as long as I wear the jeans all the time.

How do I fade out my blue Wrangler jeans the quickest?

I like my Wranglers to have that faded look, when the blue fades away and the color is lighter. What are some methods I could do to get the jeans to that level.
